Have you ever taken a leap of Faith? Leara Rhodes’ second novel, The Darkest Night in December, takes you on Sharon McGee’s journey from poverty to hope. It is a delightful read of a young Irish woman’s determination to follow her dream.
The story follows Sharon from her harrowing voyage from NYC to Savannah, Ga. She leaves the security of her immigrant community to begin a new life by accepting an accounting position in Savannah. She is determined to show her worth in a position that is normally held by men. Her new life begins with a new community of women in her assigned boarding house. Feeling of loneliness and self-doubt are eventually replaced with acceptance and friendship. Through new relationships, Sharon finds her inner strength and focuses on what she really wants out of her life.
I find the Irish proverb, referenced early in the story, “Your feet will bring you to where your heart is” best summarizes this novel. I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it to anyone interested in the struggles of women’s rights during the early 1900’s.
