Partings in Croatia

Saying goodbye can mean many things when one travels. I said goodbye to the students at the dinner on our last evening. I said goodbye to the people in the hotel who made it possible to teach the course so smoothly in Zagreb. I said goodbye, temporarily to Zagreb on my way to Rijeka. In Rijeka, I said goodbye to items from my suitcase. I discovered in all the up and down stairs with the failed Airb&b, I needed to lighten the load. So two pair of shoes (one highly worn, another were dress sandals that were hard to walk long distances in, curlers, bottle of water, digestive crackers (hard to kick the habit of traveling with them since London days), clothes washing detergent, etc., etc. including a cloth bag addition from Avid Bookshop that was given to me free to put items in for our guests during the class. All of this I said goodbye to. I had already given my Edwidge Dandicat book to a student and the travel writing book to Alex. I did lighten the load. I have regrouped an entire tote bag of souvenirs and gifts for family and friends and have not finished my list yet. These will be small jewelry items that will not take up space…I am hoping. These I will get in Zagreb, since there does not seem to be a lot of shops in Rijeka and I should know, I have walked several times around the city. It w.ill be interesting packing the last day. I feel confident that I have not said goodbye to enough and will have to pay extra for my bag to be put on the airplane. All in good time. For now I am ready to say goodbye to Rijeka.
