In June I learned that I was nominated for the People’s Choice Award for Dancing with the Athens Stars, a fundraiser for Project Safe to assist abused women and children. I was delighted and began to plan on how to raise money to win–for every vote cast was a dollar to help Project Safe. To begin, I sent out an email request to friends and netted a dozen people who volunteered to help me in a variety of ways. I call them my “Dancing Team.” We planned an art opening, a salsa dance and homemade soap. The women at the YWCO in the arthritis aerobics class supported the campaign. Friends and colleagues found out through listservs, Facebook, and bookmarks left around town also supported the campaign. And WE WON!
With the help of my Dancing Team and support of family, friends and colleagues, we begin the second movement of our dancing travels. I will be dancing on the Classic City Stage on April 16, 2016. Project Safe will offer me the services of a professional dance instructor. I will begin to learn how to waltz, something I have always wanted to be able to do. Another goal is to raise money to help Project Safe with their work. I have a People’s Choice Facebook page that will offer details on events and activities associated with the dancing. This blog, however, will document the journey that I and the “Dancing Team” will take throughout he weeks leading up to the actual dance. Stay with me and be a part of the dance.
