Must confess, I watched the press conference when they brought baby boy out to meet his public for the first time. I had the news on and was doing things around the flat while they waited and waited and filled time with chatter. I caught on that they were going to bring out the baby and after Monday night’s high table at the Trinity College, I wanted to see. During high table (think Harry Potter with the students at age old oak tables with chairs and the faculty seated on a platform raised above them with lots of servers working together like a well orchestrated dinner serving a three course meal with two different wines and espresso at the end. At these high tables, semi formal with a lecture in the hall of some renowned Oxford scholar and then champagne in the garden before dinner, no one is to have their mobile phones out or accessible; however, at 8:29 pm a roar (again not to be done during high table, one is not to even leave the table much less roar) went out among the students and half of them shouted, “It’s a boy!” There was much commotion and cheering for a short time until the students settled back down. Now these are 18 to 21 year old students who are American. Their excitement was contagious. The faculty (Oxford dons, tutors, directors, and guests) smiled silently and continued with their meal. All very proper. All very British.
